Lealman Exchange is hosting a series of free beginner’s workshops in Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, presented by Ikebana International Chapter 65 St. Petersburg.

Ikebana is more than putting flowers in a vase. The word translates loosely to “bringing flowers to life,” and the practice is built around composition, balance, and the way a few carefully chosen stems can capture something about nature itself. It comes out of Japan’s long tradition of flower arranging schools, and Chapter 65 has built a local community around studying that tradition along with the culture and history behind it.

These workshops are designed for people who have never tried Ikebana before. No experience is needed, and each class stands on its own, so you can join for one session or all four. A certified sensei will lead the class, floral materials and tools are provided, and you’ll take your finished arrangement home with you.

Workshop dates:

Each session runs from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Neri Event Room at Lealman Exchange, 5175 45th Street N.

The workshops are free and open to anyone, but registration is limited. You can register on eventbrite.
