Lealman Exchange, in collaboration with the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg, is proud to launch its next free swim cohort for Lealman residents, now expanded to include a free lifeguard prep training program for teens.

Supported by funding from Community Foundation Tampa Bay and Step into Swim, these programs aim to increase water safety, build confidence, and create workforce pathways for Lealman youth — all at no cost to participating families.

Both programs will take place at the Jim & Heather Gills YMCA. Once all interested Lealman residents have been accommodated, any remaining open spaces will be offered to families from neighboring communities.

Free Swim Lessons for Lealman Youth (Ages 6–16)

This 8-week program is open to youth of any swimming ability, from beginners to confident swimmers. Each weekly session includes 30 minutes of structured swim lessons followed by 30 minutes of free swim, giving participants time to practice skills and build comfort in the water.

Program Details

A mandatory in-person orientation will be held on Thursday, March 12 at 6:30 PM for all families.

NEW: Free Lifeguard Prep Program for Teens (Ages 16–19)

In addition to swim lessons, Lealman Exchange is launching a free lifeguard prep program designed to help teens build endurance and master the foundational skills needed to pursue lifeguard certification.

This 4-week program is ideal for strong swimmers interested in summer employment and long-term workforce opportunities.

Program Details

Participants who successfully complete the program will be sponsored for their lifeguard certification and guaranteed a job interview, creating a direct pipeline to paid employment.

Water safety saves lives — and these programs ensure Lealman youth have both the skills and opportunities to thrive.
