Lealman is home to several committees and organizations that play crucial roles in its development and well-being. Understanding the distinct functions and collaborative efforts of these groups can help residents, businesses, and new staff navigate the community landscape more effectively.

Lealman Community Redevelopment Area (CRA)

The Lealman Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) is a designated area within Lealman that focuses on revitalization and economic development. The Lealman CRA Advisory Committee, composed of nine members appointed by the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners, advises the Community Redevelopment Agency on the community redevelopment plan and related issues. The committee’s responsibilities include recommending policies and projects that promote economic growth, improve infrastructure, and enhance the overall quality of life in the CRA. The committee meets monthly at the Lealman Exchange to discuss and plan these initiatives.

The CRA Advisory Committee is looking for two more Lealman residents to join. More details are available on the committee’s website here.

Lealman Community District Services (LCDS)

The Lealman Community District Services (LCDS) is a nonprofit organized of citizens, businesses, and charity organizations that collaborate to bring community and recreational services to the Lealman Community. The organization meets every other month and membership is extended on an individual basis.

“LCDS was created to bring services to Lealman that have been lacking for decades. One of our biggest focuses has been bringing recreation to Lealman, and bringing all of Lealman together,” said Lealman Fire Chief Jim Millican, President of LCDS.

LCDS meets bi-monthly. For more information, contact Mackenzie Duffresne at mdufresne@pinellashousing.com.

Lealman Community Association (LCA)

The Lealman Community Association (LCA) is a grassroots group of residents, community advocates, and organizations working together to improve the Lealman Community. The LCA was established by Ray Neri and his legacy carries on as the LCA continues to organize community meetings, advocate for residents’ concerns, and work on neighborhood improvement projects. The LCA serves as a bridge between the residents and local government, ensuring that the voices of the community are heard and acted upon. The LCA is unique in that it covers East and West Lealman.

“The LCA’s goal is to bring a sense of community to the Lealman residents,” said Laura Simkanish, LCA President.

The LCA meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Lealman Exchange, 5175 45th St. N. The LCA encourages residents to join the conversation and make their voices heard as the group works to promote and improve Lealman for all. No registration is necessary and the LCA encourages all residents of Lealman to become a member and vote on the issues and discussions that impact the community.

Lealman Engagement Committee (LEC)

On 05/27/2022, community leaders Tom Almonte, Neil Brickfield, Chief Richard Graham, Chief Jim Millican, Laura Simkanich, Steven Cleveland, and Zelda O’Connell met to discuss the future of community events in Lealman. This pivotal meeting led to the creation of the Lealman Engagement Committee through a partnership with Pinellas County Government, Pinellas Polica Athletic League, Pinellas County Housing Authority, Lealman Fire District, Lealman Community Association, and Florida Dream Center.

The LEC is made up of mostly local nonprofits and businesses, and the members volunteer their time to make incredible events like the annual Lealman Independence Day Celebration fun and engaging for all!

“The Lealman Engagement Committee (LEC) is an action-oriented group of volunteer organizations that believes Lealman is on the rise and that community growth should be an integral part of its development,” said Zelda O’Connell, Chief Operating Officer of the Florida Dream Center. “A favorite part of my job is what we all accomplish together in the LEC.”

From holiday celebrations to the annual Honey and Arts Festival, the LEC plays a pivotal role in creating a vibrant and connected community. These events not only provide entertainment but also foster a sense of belonging and community pride.

The LEC is always looking for sponsors to help support the events. If your business would like to sponsor or if you know someone who may, contact Zelda O’Connell at zelda@floridadreamcenter.org

How These Organizations Work Together

While each of these organizations has a unique focus, they often collaborate to achieve common goals. For example, the LCDS might work with the LCA to address infrastructure issues raised by residents, or the LEC might partner with the LEX to host community events. The Lealman Collective Impact Council plays a crucial role in facilitating these collaborations, ensuring that efforts are aligned and resources are used effectively.

How You Can Participate

Residents, businesses, and organizations are encouraged to get involved with these groups to help shape the future of Lealman. Whether by attending meetings, volunteering, or participating in events, community involvement is essential for the success of these initiatives. By working together, the Lealman community can continue to grow and thrive, making it a better place for everyone.

In conclusion, understanding the roles and contributions of the various committees and organizations in Lealman is essential for effective community engagement. Each group, from the LCDS to the CRA, plays a vital role in promoting community growth and well-being. By participating and collaborating, residents and stakeholders can ensure that Lealman remains a vibrant and prosperous community.

In the next Lealman Voice, we’ll introduce you to some of the nonprofits and organizations providing resources, recreation and support to the Lealman community.
